January 18, 1893 –


        I will attend medically the county poor for the year 1893 for one hundred ninety-four dollars and furnish the medicine.

Who was J. L. Bennett, M. D.?


1888 - Came to Kearney from Iowa and entered the financial business
was Secretary and Manager of the Midway Loan and Trust; was active in business community


May 1890 – Opened a real estate and loan office


July 15, 1890 – Decided to give up business interests and go back to his profession as a doctor. Had practiced for 14 years, member of the Iowa Medical Association. Was member of medical department of Drake University in Des Moines for 5 years before resigning “to enter another field of usefulness at Kearney.”

Jan. 10, 1895 – again appointed county physician


July 11, 1894 –


Contract with Dr. F. E. Dalrymple

$95 for medical services for paupers in Buffalo County
$140 for medical services and medicine
$200 for medical services and medicine and performing necessary surgical operations


Includes Poor Farm but not inside Kearney city limits

May have practiced in Gibbon


July 17, 1894 –


Contract with Dr. F. E. Dalrymple [to replace July 11 contract??]


$200 for necessary medical services furnishing all medicine himself and all surgical services for poor including Poor Farm but not inside Kearney city limits
 

1898 –


Contract with F. A. Packard

$200 for visits and to prescribe for the indigent sick
$90 for furnishing medicine and appliances
County Board members would judge who the indigent sick were.

January 5, 1900 –


Contract with Dr. M. L. Mansfield to last until January 3, 1901

$200 for visits and to prescribe for the indigent sick
$49 for furnishing medicine and appliances
County Board members would judge who the indigent sick were.

Jan 8, 1901 – Dr. M. L. Mansfield was appointed county physician for the ensuing year at a salary of $245.00.


Feb 27, 1902 – Moved to a farm west of Kearney and planned to plant it to alfalfa.


May 12, 1903 – Bought the milk route operated by Gibbons & Greene

3. From the Buffalo County Court Record Book – Jan. 1928 -
 

June 22, 1928 – Karl Borgman –

        Search warrant issued for manufacture and sale of liquor in 20-11-13

            (Gardner Township southeast of Ravenna, north of Sodtown)


Found 45 gallons of whiskey, 10 barrels of mash, 1 “red hot” still, and [live] bodies of Robert Mackey and Karl Borgman

 

They were charged with:

        Count I possessing a still

        Count II possessing mash

        Count III possessing a quantity of liquor they had manufactured for the purpose of sale without a license from the State of Nebraska


Bond was set at $1000 for each which neither could pay so they were jailed
