Joseph E. Johnson

Born 1817 in state of NY, one of 16 children
Parents converted to Mormonism in winter 1830-31
        (Book of Mormon was published in 1830)

Was part of the group of Mormons who went from New York to Kirtland, Ohio

1832 – moved to Kirtland, OH with parents and Mormons
        Began lifelong friendship with Joseph Smith, founder of Mormonism

To Nauvoo, Illinois
1837 – Moved to Nauvoo, Ill, where he married wife #1

To Kanesville
1848 – Moved to Millers Hollow
ΰ Kanesville ΰCouncil Bluffs, IA 1st city council,

1850 – Went to Utah to see country, planned to move there permanently

1852 – Published a newspaper in Council Bluffs

Published newspapers in Council Bluffs, Omaha, Crescent, Iowa, and another in Council Bluffs


1854 – First store on site of Omaha, 1st newspaper in NE at Omaha (printed in Council B)

1857 – Published newspaper and laid out the town of Crescent, IA

1858 – Published a second newspaper in Council Bluffs.

Moved to Wood River Center
 

1859 – Established a road ranche on the Mormon Trail at Wood River Center
        Man of considerable means and of more than average ability. (Bassett says)

        Established a store, a blacksmith and wagon repair shop, a tintype gallery, a bakery and place where meals might be had, supplies bought

        Had 2 wives and several children when he moved there

April, 1860 - published The Huntsman's Echo at Wood River Center, Nebraska Territory

August 20, 1860 – first post office in the county, Joseph E. Johnson, postmaster

1861 – Another woman arrived, intended 3rd wife. People not happy
 

        Johnson decided it was time to finally move to Utah

        After arriving, married 3rd wife

Nov. 6, 1882 – became ill with pneumonia


Dec. 17, 1882 – Died. All 3 wives were at bedside. Also survived by 27 children

1860 - Great Western Stage Company extended route from Omaha on north side of Platte, as far west as Fort Kearney
        1st stop east out of Ft Kearney (or Boyd Ranch) - established at Wood River Center
        On Joseph Owen farm, with August Meyer in charge

1864, August – stampede occasioned by a raid of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians.
        - Settlers north of the Platte gathered at Wood River Center, placed themselves under command of August Meyer, barricaded themselves in an unfinished log building, and later all journeyed to Omaha and Iowa points until fear of the raid was over

        - except August Meyer and "Ted" Oliver, who remained to care for the stage company horses.
