Harriet (Hattie) Anderson

Harriet Anderson was born at Marengo, Iowa on December 16, 1892. She was the first child of David Anderson’s second marriage. Her mother was Regina Swan Anderson. Harriet was just a toddler when she moved with her parents and half-siblings to Colfax County, Nebraska. When her father retired in 1905 and moved to Nester, California, she and her sister moved there also. By 1910 both her father and sister had died and she was living with her mother in San Diego. By 1920 her mother had died also, and Harriet was all alone.

January 1920 found Harriet living in a YWCA in San Diego and working in a cafeteria. But she had met a young man and soon she married Gilbert Hollaway.

Gilbert was a native of Arkansas. He was born on September 17, 1894 in Little Rock. His father died before he was 12 and his mother, Anna, married a widower, Bill Lamb, who had six children. In 1910 Gilbert, his mother, and two of his three siblings were living on the Lamb farm in Pike County, Arkansas. Gilbert, who was now 16, attended school some that year and worked on his step-father’s farm. When World War I came along, Gilbert joined the service. This was probably how he happened to be in California in 1920.

Harriet and Gilbert lived the rest of their lives in San Diego. They had two children. Gilbert had a 20-year career with the Army ROTC. After retiring he worked for the San Diego Unified School Library Department. He suffered a heart attack and died March 21, 1957 at age 62.

The following August when great grand-nephew’s first child was born, Harriet stayed with them for that first week to help take care of the new baby. When she died on April 26, 1963, she was 70 years old.

Harriet and Gilbert’s second child, Harriet Barbara, who went by her middle name, was also born in San Diego on May 28, 1926. Barbara was married on June 25, 1949 in Salono, California.  Her husband made the Air Force his career so they lived in a variety of different places including Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Pennsylvania. Barbara and her husband had one child. When Barbara died on January 19, 1995, she and her husband were living in Prescott, Arizona.  She is buried in Heritage Memorial Park cemetery in Dewey, Arizona.
