Andrew (Anders) Anderson

Anders was David and Ola’s eldest child. He was born on October 22, 1863, in Ivatofta Parish, Kristianstad County, Skäne, Sweden, in a poorhouse where his mother resided for a short time. She had come there from Osterslof #12 in Osterslof Parish. Anders was baptized in Ivatofta Parish but the clergyman wrote to the clergy in Osterslof informing him of the birth. Apparently since Ola came from there he felt she and the baby were the responsibility of that parish. Ola and Anders soon moved back to Osterslof #12.

When he was about three Anders, his parents and baby brother, Sven, moved to #41Osterslof. In the spring of 1868 his father left for "Amerika" and two years later, when Anders was seven he came to the United States with his mother, brother and sister, Elna.

The American name for Anders is Andrew and this is the name he used for the rest of his life. The family lived in Illinois first and then moved to a farm in York Township, Iowa County, Iowa, where Andrew attended school and probably helped his father on the farm. This is where they were in 1880. By 1885 he had moved with the family to Hilton Township, Iowa County, near Marengo. The Iowa census for that year shows him still living at home but following the occupation of farmer.

Over the next ten years Andrew’s mother died and his father remarried and then moved to Colfax County, Nebraska. We don’t know exactly what Andrew did during this time but, except for a short while in Duluth, Minnesota working as a police officer, he was probably farming. While he was in Duluth he met his wife, Tilda, whom he married in 1899.

By 1900 Andrew had returned to Nebraska and rented a farm near Howells. A daughter, Marian, was born in June 1900 and twin sons Ernest and Edward were born August 4, 1902. In 1911 Andrew bought a farm near North Bend, in Dodge County, Nebraska, and farmed there for the rest of his life.

Edward L. Anderson, son of William O. Anderson identified this photo as being of his dad, William O. and William's brother Andrew.  Andrew, left, was twelve years older than William.

Andrew died in 1928, possibly of cancer. He is buried in Woodland Cemetery near North Bend.

After the death of her husband, Tilda lived for some time with Ernest. By 1930 Ernest, his wife, and two small children were living in Sioux City. Since both parents were employed, apparently Tilda took care of the toddlers. After her death Nov. 5, 1958 she was buried beside her husband.
